Norwell High School senior Leah Werling signed her letter of intent to continue her academic and athletic careers at Indiana Tech. She will be playing softball and intends to study Forensic Science and Recreational Therapy.

Leah is an Ossian native and is the daughter of Barb and Jay Werling. She says she chose Indiana Tech of the two schools that recruited her because of the variety of majors they have available, as well as having plenty of room for her to adjust to the life she wants to live while still being close to home. Lansing College was another option.

As far as favorite memories goes, Leah shares that it was a trip to Raising Cane’s after winning the Regional Championship game against Yorktown last year that sticks out in her mind. “The team had the greatest victory meals ever.”

When asked if she had a parent or mentor that changed her life, Leah pointed to Coach Kevin Baird.

“Always work every practice to get 1 percent better,” Leah quoted. “It shows that you don’t have to make outstanding progress in one sitting, but also to push to get that little bit better with every swing, every rep and every day.”

Leah says that signing with Indiana Tech brings her “full circle” and that her goal with signing with the school - the school of her dreams - is to inspire and motivate young girls with stairs in their eyes just like she did.

“I love helping at camps and teaching them about the game. This game is not just a big, yellow ball thrown to a big stick, it’s a game that teaches girls about friendships, teamwork, and mental attitude. It’s very hard to enjoy anything without those three things in life. My message to those young athletes is: Control what you can control. You can have all the talent in the world but still won’t succeed as far as the girl who is always smiling, helping, picking up equipment, and cheering on her teammates. Attitude and effort will get you through every hardship you will face.”
