Brian Schindler, a Berne native and well-known member of the Markle community, is in the spotlight this week for Greenbear Digital Media’s “Military Monday”. Military Monday is our way of expressing gratitude for the brave men and women who have served this country through the military.
Brian, 79, is the son of the late Ervin and Margaret Schindler. He is married to Donna (Frye) Schindler and has two children, Tria Henderson and Jason Schindler. He has five grandchildren: Jonathan Schindler, Preston Wright, Hannah Schindler, Sabrina Wright and Molly Schindler. His sister, Dana Pursley, passed away in 2019.
Brian graduated high school in 1963 and attended Indiana University for college. He joined the United States Marine Corps (USMC) in 1965, completing his basic training in San Diego at Camp Pendleton. Brian spent time during his service in Vietnam at Chu Lai and Danang, and also spent time at the Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) in North Carolina.
Brian and his wife Donna started their family business, Crossroads Pantry, in Markle in the 1980s. Nowadays, their two children Jason and Tria, have taken over while Brian and Donna enjoy retirement and spend time with their family.
Looking back, Brian says he wishes he would have “studied harder” and “listened to my parents better.” His reason for joining the military was, simply, “to serve my country.”
Most importantly, Brian says his future plans are “to be thankful every day for everything God has given me.”
We at Greenbear want to honor our military men and women with our Military Monday. Contact me Katelynn Farley kfarley@greenbeartheden.com for more intel.
